My name is Yeldana. I am the 4th year student of translation studies department. In 2017 I’ve got an opportunity to go to Anyang University, South Korea as an exchange student within the academic mobility programme. Korea has opened new horizons for me; I left my comfort zone, became more confident and improved my communication skills. Second-year KAZGUU students of Law Enforcement Syrym Beysembekov and Altyn Zeynulla send their greetings to KAZGUU and talk about their impressions of studying at the Russian Academy of Lawyers and Notaries (Moscow) under the academic mobility programme.

_MG_1800Syrym Beysembekov:

“I am a second-year Law Enforcement student.  At the moment, I am studying at RALN under the academic mobility programme in Moscow.

First, I would like to express my gratitude to the management team of the Higher School of Law, B. Askarova and other members of the International Department for this opportunity.

Similarity of the two countries’ legislatures, a leading position of the Russian Federation in almost all sectors in the Eurasian continent, and a genuine interest in the Russian culture defined my choice.

The university campus is located near the capital’s main landmarks.  The linear system of education is exceptional.  Highly qualified teaching staff, opportunities to participate in research conferences organised by the university itself and the capital’s other universities, and opportunities to attend elective courses to develop professional skills – all of these reassured me that I had made the right choice.  I especially liked the fact that the teachers devote a lot of attention to the practical aspects, thus, reinforcing the theoretical knowledge acquired in class.

What are the benefits of taking part in this programme?  First, this is a great chance to fulfil myself as a person.  Being here, thousands of kilometres away from home, you realise what you are really worth.  Second, you meet a lot of people, which develops your communication skills.  Third, you acquire experience that will sooner or later have an effect on your personal development.  And fourth, you will have an advantage in employment.

I encourage all the students of our university to take part in this programme!”

IMG_4247-10-03-17-09-39

Altyn Zeynulla:

“The RALN academy is famous for their highly qualified teachers who are great at their job and present the material in a way that is accessible to the students.  I am also fortunate with my classmates who are fun and outgoing guys, and I have never been bored.

In general, I like it here very much.  In the beginning, it was hard and I was homesick and missed KAZGUU, but now I don’t regret coming here, as I think this is a great experience that will help me in the near future.”

A 2nd-year student of Law Enforcement, Zhaniye Tulenbayeva, is to spend her 2016-2017 spring semester at Seoul National University, Republic of Korea, under the academic mobility programme.  Seoul University is the largest and the most well-known university in South Korea, and is located in Seoul.  The University occupies the 50th place in the 2010 international university rating.  We would like to wish Zhaniye Tulenbayeva success in her studies!

We continue our column “International Students’ Life”, which specially prepared by KAZGUU International Department.  This time our guest is Magdalena Anna Kaźmierczak, a master’s student at KAZGUU.

This is an interview with her, where you can find a lot of interesting facts from the life of an international student from Poland.

  1. Where are you from (country, town)?

I am from Poland where I have lived in many places but my favorite one is Wroclaw.

  1. When did you first come to KAZGUU and submit your application?

I applied to KAZGUU in August 2016

  1. What is your major and year of study?

I am a first-year master’s degree student in International Law

  1. How did you learn about KAZGUU?

It was not difficult to hear about KAZGUU.  This university is one of the best in Kazakhstan so people talk about it and recommend it to friends.

  1. How do you spend your leisure time?

I spend my free time doing many different things. I enjoy hanging out with friends, reading about travelling and mountains, and planning new trips.

  1. What are your favorite books and films?

It is difficult to name just one favorite film or book. I have many favorite books from childhood that I like to come back to, such as Harry Potter.  As for films, I enjoy those with Meryl Streep. I admire her because not only is she a great actor, but she can also use the fact that she is famous to change the world for the better. Her statements about women’s position in the world encourage real strength and spread beautiful ideas.

  1. What are you planning to do after graduating?

After graduation I would like to find a job in politics or diplomacy.

  1. What was your first impression about KAZGUU?

I was really impressed when I first arrived in Astana and I saw this building. It was so huge and monumental, I thought it may be a residence of someone very important because it looks very nice.

  1. Could you please describe 3 main differences or similarities between Kazakhstan and your country?

Three differences can be found quite easily because we have totally different climate. I am freezing during the winter here! Another thing that I cannot get used to is that it is difficult for a vegetarian to live in Kazakhstan. Everyone eats meat here! A couple of times, I even thought about a tasty shashlyk chicken, but I didn’t break! . The third difference is the people. I love the variety and I enjoy the fact that in Kazakhstan there is mix of cultures, races and languages and there are no conflicts between people!

Three similarities: 1) In both Poland and Kazakhstan there are beautiful mountains where I enjoy hiking!  2) People in both countries are spreading positive energy and are very kind. 3) Both Kazakhstani and Polish people love winter sports. Your Universiade was a great example. I truly congratulate you, it was a great event!

  1. Was it hard for you to integrate into the Kazakhstani society? Were you shocked by anything?

It was hard in the beginning.  As I have already said, I am a vegetarian and it was quite difficult to start living in a country of meat lovers.  Nevertheless, people were very helpful and I felt support all the time even though I didn’t speak Russian then.

  1. Do you have any favorite places in Astana? List three places.

I do have a few favorite places in Astana. I do enjoy going to the opera. I think it is a unique place and a very beautiful building. The next place I like is the Central park.  In winter, I go cross-country skiing there and I like to walk in summer. And the last but not least is the library at KAZGUU. It is such a peaceful place! I enjoy studying there and I recommend it to everyone  .

Corvinus University in Budapest is one of the best schools of Europe.  The Economics Department has been hosting our students under the academic mobility programme for three years.  The students have always given highly positive comments: the infrastructure, library, and teachers are among the strengths of our partner university.

There is no doubt that Budapest itself dazzles with its beauty and openness to young people from all over the world.  Below are the first impressions of Gulsaya Tatiyeva, a 3rd-year student of Economics.  We wish Gulsaya Tatiyeva and Kundyz Imanbayeva success in their studies at Corvinus University.

“Budapest is a very beautiful city with outstanding architecture and magnificent bridges that connect the two historical parts of the city.  Literally everywhere you go, you can see various sculptures and architectural landmarks.  In short, we fell in love with the city!  There are a lot of students here from different parts of the world.”

Dear students,

The Department of International office continues to tell you about our international students in the International students’ life at KAZGUU column.  Today we meet Fayez Najib from Kabul, Afganistan, a 1st-year student of Finance.

  1. What was your first impression about KAZGUU University?

– When I first came here, I saw KAZGUU University’s building with very unique and classical style of architecture which looked very interesting to me.

  1. Could you please describe three main differences or similarities between Kazakhstan and your country?

– 1. The weather in Afghanistan is almost the same as in Kazakhstan: we also have four seasons.  But our winter is not as cold as it is in Astana.

– 2. We have similar food like Manto, Palo (plov), and we also have similarities in culture.  For example, before starting dinner, we wait for everyone to come.  However, there are some big differences between Kazakhstan and Afghanistan in terms of cultural dress and dance.

  1. You are one of the first international students to take part in the KAZGUU Student Initiation ceremony, and your school won a cup at Initiation.  How did you feel about that?  And what can you say about this event in general?

When I first decided to join this competition, I had no idea what it was about; I only knew that there would be a dance.  I have been interested in dancing since my school years, so that’s why I decided to join the competition.  It was very challenging for me because I didn’t know Russian, while everybody there was speaking Russian.  It was a great opportunity for me to improve my Russian, which really helped me!  But some of the 2nd-, 3rd-, and 4th-year students tried to help me and explained everything in English.  Not only did it help my language skills, but I also found some great friends there.  When we won the cup, I was feeling very happy.  I can’t explain the feeling – it was the results of two months’ hard work.  In general, all I can say is that it is a very interesting and exciting journey that helps first-year students to find friends and communicate with other people.  It makes the university environment more comfortable for new students.

  1. Was it hard for you to integrate into the Kazakhstani society?  Were you shocked by anything?

– It was not so easy for me to get used to the Kazakh society!  I was at first shocked to find that most people never smile here, everyone I see or try to have a conversation with, are always in bad mood!  Sometimes, they don’t want to even talk to you))  However, I don’t judge them because they might have their own problems).

  1. Do you have any favorite places in Astana?

– Sky beach club in Khan Shatyr.  Samal riverside is a very good place for jogging and hanging out, especially in summer.  And the Central park is also one of the places I find exciting.

I am a 2nd year student of Law at KAZGUU University.  I came to Kazakhstan from Moscow.

There were several reasons why I chose to study at a specialised law university in Kazakhstan.  First, Russian and Kazakhstani legislation law are identical in many ways.  And second, Kazakhstan has always been at the centre of attention of the world community, including my own countrymen.  This is why I am interested in looking at the process of the development of the country from within.  And, of course, this is a new experience.  KAZGUU attracted me by its modernity, and the students’ reviews of the quality of education and teaching.  Besides, the programme of developing the human resources for the legal sphere is different from that of the Academy (Russian Academy of Lawyers and Notaries), and I got an excellent opportunity to gain a wider range of knowledge.

The University is beautiful, modern, and spacious.  I really liked the comfortable and technically equipped classrooms.  The teachers share their knowledge from their heart, and I haven’t yet seen a sign of dry and formal approach.  I am convinced that the knowledge I acquired here will help me in my future professional career.
