Dear website users, we are pleased to present a new column "SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW" in which we plan to regularly acquaint you with successful graduates, faculty and chief executives of KAZGUU University. Also a guest of the column can be each of you, if you are among the alma mater of activists, author of interesting projects aimed at achieving personal and team success in the professional field and in general, the popularization of KAZGUU University.

Olzhas Rayev, KAZGUU graduate and a special advisor on investments to the RK Embassy in South Korea, is certain of this claim. In this interview, he shares his opinions on the necessity of legal literacy for the active participants of the country’s social life and the contribution that his Alma Mater’s graduates are making to building Kazakhstan’s legal system.

-Olzhas Kairbekovich, what motivated you to study law?

-This decision was largely influenced by my parents. Since childhood, I have been witness to different discussions and debates in the professional environment about various flaws in the legislation, and legal collisions. At that time, the country was only starting on its way to building a state of law. This inspired me to actively participate in this, which is impossible without a good law education.

-Why did you choose KAZGUU?

-There were two reasons: quality of education, that was clearly seen from the feedback of the first students, from the quality of the facilities, and from the quality of the teaching staff. KAZGUU was the only specialised law university. And the second reason was the location. For me, it was important to study in the capital of my homeland. This choice defined all the major events in my life, such as meeting interesting people, many of whom are still my friends. Astana branch grew together with our capital. Proximity to the central bodies of government made it possible to learn not only from the distinguished theorists of KAZGUU, but also the practicing professionals. The range of knowledge that we received through the curriculum eventually defined our competitiveness and fitness to serve the state or work for the private sector.

-How much of your knowledge of law do you apply in your work today?

-Quite a lot. Sometimes I have to learn about the laws of other countries in order to make the right decision. Without a law degree, it would be very difficult to understand the details of certain laws and regulations. Moreover, it is not only the specialised activities of attracting investment or promoting Kazakhstan’s export on foreign markets that are governed by laws and regulations, but also the lives of all of us as economic and legal subjects, so knowing these the law is important for every citizen.

How to train highly qualified specialists for Kazakhstan?

This is the task that Samat Panov, a teacher at KAZGUU Higher School of Economics and KAZGUU Business School, has set for himself. Samat is the director and a cofounder of the educational company Marketing Partners LTD, Master of Business Administration, and Edmund S. Muskie fellow. Throughout his 8-year tenure at KAZGUU, Samat Tulegenovich has been sharing his experience of success, and teaching his students to set clear goals, not to be afraid of making mistakes, and to learn valuable lessons from them.

– Samat Tulegenovich, where have you studied and worked?

– I got my first degree in Finance and Credit at the Department of Economics of Karaganda State University. I graduated with honours and stayed there to teach. My following work experience is mostly connected with finance and marketing. In the past 20 years I have worked at KarSU, Temirbank JSC, Astana Finance JSC, National Business magazine, Astana Finance JSC and Tsesna Capital JSC brokerage companies. In 2007 I graduated with honours from the Golden Gate University, San Francisco, USA, under the Edmund S. Muskie Fellowship programme sponsored by the US Department of State. I got my MBA there. My last corporate position was with Tsesna Capital JSC, as a managing director and member of the board. Since 2012 I have been the director of Marketing Partners LTD.

– Which discipline are you teaching at KAZGUU at the moment?

– I started teaching at KAZGUU Business School’s MBA programme in 2009. Since 2015, I have also been teaching at the Higher School of Economics. In this time, I have taught such disciplines as ‘Foundations of Management’, ‘Foundations of Marketing’, ‘Public Speaking’, ‘Advertising Strategy and Promotion’, and ‘Leadership’. At the moment, I am teaching two disciplines: ‘Foundations of Management’ and ‘International Marketing’.

– What affected your decision to combine your main job with teaching at HSE and the Business School?

– I started my career as a teacher at KarSU. Ten years of working at different companies and studying in the US made me convinced that I should teach at a university. I want the young generation to be more competitive, to have the right set of values, to achieve great things. I believe that I can share my knowledge, experience, and my vision with the young people.

– What principles guide you in your teaching?

– When teaching, I use various methods: traditional lectures, discussions, business case analysis, team work, and presentations. The basic idea is that the students should do more independent work, making their own decisions and acting on them. In my view, this is the most effective way to teach. Recently, I have started to end all my lessons with a Q&A session. Students write their questions of pieces of paper, and then take turns to answer them.

In my teaching, I am guided by such principles as openness, result-orientation, punctuality, and integrity. My goal as a teacher is to motivate people to think, make decisions, see future prospects, learn and constantly develop themselves. I always try to help my students to develop time management skills, communication skills, decision making skills, presentation skills, team working skills, and leadership skills. The assignments that I give my students and my system of assessment are aimed at identifying, developing, and mastering these skills. I must encourage the students to develop, learn, make mistakes and draw lessons from them. I also want my students to be honest and highly competent professionals. This is the type of specialists that we lack today.

Since the recognition of the independence until today in the relations of Kazakhstan and South Korea continues to increase the potential for cooperation in the field of higher education. The most common format of interaction between the two countries is students’ education through dual degree programs and academic mobility. The formation of inter-institutional relations of Kazakhstan and South Korea originates from this. KAZGUU Higher School of Economics has developed active partnerships with colleagues from the Land of the Morning Calm since 2015. The dual-degree program in the field of business started since that time in cooperation with Solbridge International School of Business.

SolBridge International School of Business is located in Daejeon city, which is the heart of the Korean Peninsula, just an hour’s drive from Seoul. The city is famous as the Korean “Silicon Valley” – Center for research and place of high-tech development, and as the city with 5000 years of history. Studying at home country and abroad, KAZGUU students have the ability to simultaneously receive two undergraduate degrees – Economics and Business and Business Administration. The format of cooperation is simple – the first two years KAZGUU students gnaw the granite of science in the walls of their native alma mater, and the last two years study at Solbridge University. That said a leading South Korean university recognizes 2 years of training at KAZGUU and KAZGUU University – education at Solbridge.   

Education at the University is conducted in English with additional study of one of the three Oriental languages ​​- Japanese, Korean and Chinese.

“I had the unique opportunity to become one of the first participants of academic mobility programs and to study at an international school of Solbridge. During the first semester I studied 6 subjects in English. SolBridge International School of Business offers a program for training business leaders, internships in leading companies, the American education system and other popular areas for professional growth. It is a modern building equipped with high-tech equipment, which has students from around the world and employs highly qualified professors from top universities of the US, Britain, Canada, China, South Africa, Australia, India, Japan and so on”, – says Kazybek Orynhanov, a student of KAZGUU Higher School of Economics.

He is currently continuing his studies in Solbridge, but within the dual degree program. Explaining his choice, the future financier, primarily focused on the fact that Solbridge became for him the very niche where he can gain useful experience in the field of development of the world economic system and current knowledge of the chosen specialization.

– How is it realised in practice?

– Today Solbridge organizes student internships in advanced technology companies in the world, here are conducted various studies in the most dynamic sectors of the economy and finance. They implemented a program of mandatory and elective subjects and subjects for specialization. One of my favorite subjects – the launch of startups «Launching start-up business» – this is a business incubator, where a group of people work on the birth of new ideas and their subsequent implementation. Also for students organized various outreach tours in which they will present their business ideas, for instance «Asian case study», «Asian case work shop», disciplines aimed at addressing the different kinds of cases. At the general sessions are organized various competitions, the winners are provides the opportunity to travel to other countries and to continue to work with the analysis of new cases and other competition level. My goal for the next academic semester is to develop my own case on these subjects, and win a trip to the Philippines, China and South-East Asia.

– Kazybek, how did you pass the period of adaptation to the new conditions and how quickly did you get used to the unfamiliar environment?

– In the beginning, there was organized an orientation week for new students: familiarity with the university, filling out documents, city tour. We were divided into groups, where the curators were senior undergraduates. The hostel is comfortable, although it was far away, but the university has provided a bus. When registering disciplines each of us has received ID and password to log on to a special website. A unified system of newsletters Outlook is developed; it codifies all the necessary information on the curriculum. Also there is used Moodle system, where you can find the whole course of student disciplines with all materials (lectures, presentations, videos, homework, etc.). I must say that student life is full of very interesting and rich events. The University support has been an undoubted advantage: organizing trips to the cinema for us with the provision of discounts, to amusement parks and historical sites, trips to other cities. For example, there was a trip at the lowest price to the border with North Korea. During these trips, people usually come together and gain new friends. I was left with a lot of impressions and positive emotions. I really liked it there. University is a huge family where everyone knows each other. It is an international school, where students come from different countries. This gives the opportunity to develop networking, exchange of experiences, ideas, making any conclusions that will help in the identification, development and implementation of business ideas. We are taught by the best faculty.

– What can you recommend to Kazakhstani students who would like to study abroad?

– I would like to advise not to be afraid, but go ahead, try yourself in new activities, it is great experience: meeting new people from different parts of the world, the opportunity to establish useful business and personal communications, an attempt to feel a variety of academic programs, learn other languages, change the world, improve adaptation. It is necessary to take every opportunity that helps in the future to become a competitive specialist of international level. Another important factor is that studying abroad allows you to learn from the experience and then implement it in our homeland, in Kazakhstan.

– What are you planning to do after your graduation?

– I want to connect my life with the chosen specialization – finance, plan to work in the Ministry of Finance. In parallel, during training at KAZGUU, thanks to the participation in the Leadership Development Programme of the Higher School of Economics I discovered leadership qualities in me, which then “sanded” in the learning process in Solbridge. In addition, I have a great desire to see the world, to travel, to negotiate. Maybe I can learn a further specialization in the future and become a professional diplomat, or at least to combine these two directions.

– We wish you a successful implementation of all the goals!

Аталмыш ЖООның профессорлары біздің докторанттарға шетелдік кеңесші ретінде қызмет көрсетеді. Осылайша, бірлескен әрекеттердің арқасында 5 түлек даярланған. Доктарантураның қазіргі кездегі әрекет етуші бағдарламасы аясында жыл сайын 3 жылдық кезең аясында бір семестрді докторант біздің ЖООмызда оқып, авторлық зерттеулер жүргізеді және бір семестр Италияда солай білім алады. Бұл бағдарлама Қазақстан мен Еуропа Одағы арасындағы жалғасын тауып келе жатқан серіктестік аясында әзірленген болатын.

Біздің оқу бағдарламаларымыз толықтау практикаға бағдарланған сипатта екенін атап өткім келеді. Шешімдер, кейстер, жобаларды әзірлеу, диссертацияны жазу және олардың тақырыптары магистранттардың кәсіби қызметімен тығыз байланысты. -Рената Сергеевна, түлектердің сұранысқа ие екені қандай өлшемдермен бағаланады?

– Біз КАЗГЮУ түлектерінің  мансаптық өсу жолының талдауын үнемі жасап отырамыз. Оның нәтижелері келесі мәселелерді дәлелдейді. Мысалы, экономика магистрі дәрежесін алғаннан кейін жарты ішінде 80% түлектер («Экономика және қаржы») мансаптық жолда жоғары лауазымдарға қол жеткізеді. Жастарға мемлекеттік те, жекеменшік те компаниялардан жетекші орындар ұсынылады, бірінші басқару лауазымдары сеніп тапсырылады. Бұл біздің бағдарламалардың сұранысқа ие екендігінің нақты көрсеткіші деп білу керек. Бізге жұмыс беруші компаниялардан да өтініштер келіп түсіп жататын жағдайлар болып тұрады. Олар біздің ЖОО даярлаған мамандарды іздейді. Бірақ біз оларға көмектесе алмаймыз. Себебі біздің түлектеріміздің барлығы жұмыспен қамтылып қойған. Біздің оқытушылардың көпшілігі ЖООның әлеуметтік миссиясының жүзеге асырылуына қатысты толықтай жауапкершілікті ұғынады және қазақстандықтардың келесі буынына білім беру маңыздылығын жете түсінеді. Себебі олар шындығында да жастарды тәрбиелеуге өз үлестерін қосып, ел тарихында өз іздерін қалдырғысы келеді. Мұндай шоғырға мен өте белсенді, мақсатты адамдар саналатын, әрі жастармен өздерінің тәжірибесін шын жүректен бөлісуге даяр халықаралық «Болашақ» бағдарламасының түлектерін жатқызамын.

Одан өзге біз шетелдік дәріскерлерді шақыртып, өз студенттерімізге шетелдік және қазақстандық тәжірибені біріктіруіне мүмкіндік береміз. Шақырылған қонақтардың қатарында –  шетелдік компаниялар, құқықтықғ консалтингілік, аудиторлық фирмалардың басқарушы серіктестерінің өкілдері бар. Бүгінгі күні оларды біз тек дәріс оқуға ғана емес, сонымен бірге біздің түлектерімізге кәсіби болашағы үшін қажетті және қызықты болатын бірлескен бағдарламалар мен оқылатын дәріс тақырыптарын әзірлеудеміз.

Университет шетелдік әріптестермен серіктестікті қазіргі кездегі білім беру бағдарламаларында да, болашақтағы жұмыстар үшін де нығайтуда. «Сарапшы пікірі» айдарындағы сұхбатында «КАЗГЮУ Университеті» АҚ Жоғары оқу орнынан кейінгі білім және халықаралық байланыстар институтының директоры Фаизова Рената еуропалық білім беру үлгісінің университеттік бағдарламалармен бірлесу үрдістерін, қос диплом бағдарламасына қатысты, академиялық ұтқырлық пен басқа оқу мүмкіндіктеріне қатысты мәліметтермен ақпараттандырады.

– Рената Сергеевна, қазіргі кезде КАЗГЮУ қандай шетелідк серіктестермен бірлесіп қызмет етуде?

-Бүгінгі күні біз 70-тен астам серіктестермен ұзақмерзімді іскери қатынастарды орнаттық. Бірлесіп қызмет ету түрлері әралуан. Олардың қатарында білім беру бағдарламаларының көпұлттылығы, академиялық ұтқырлық, КАЗГЮУ-ге шетелдік студенттерді тарту, біздің студенттердің шетелде білім алуы, қос диплом бағдарламалары сияқты салалар қамтылған. Негізгі серіктес ретінде Оңтүстік Корея мен Жапонияның жетекші ЖООлары болып табылады. Одан өзге стратегиялық серіктестер қатарында АҚШ, Германия, Ұлыбритания, Италия, Польша сияқты елдер бар.

-Осы бағыттарға жеке-жеке тоқтала аласыз ба?

– Ұлыритания ЖООларымен біз академиялық ұтқырлық бағдарламасы аясында қарым-қатынастамыз. Қазіргі кезде ағылшын әріптестерімізбен қос диплом бағдарламасын әзірлеудеміз. Академиялық ұтқырлық бойынша жыл сайын 40-50 біздің студентіміз 10-нан астам шетелге білім алуға жіберіледі.  

Қысқа мерзімде болашақта біз КАЗЮУ академиялық ұтқырлық бағдарламасы бойынша серіктес ЖООлардан бізге 50 студенттен келіп, білім алуын жоспарлауды мақсат етіп отырмыз. Сапалы білімді қамтамасыз ете отырып, біз сонымен қатар шетелдік оқытушыларды да тарту жолында қызмет етіп жатырмыз.

Пәнаралық бағыт бойынша финдік білім беру үлгісін де қосып алу мәселесі шешілуде. Ол бүгінгі күні Еуропада үлкен сұранысқа ие үлгі болып табылады. Біз аталмыш тәжірибені отандық білім беру жүйесіне енгізбекпіз. Әрі КАЗГЮУ осы бағытты қатты дамытуға ниетті екенін айту керек. Финдік үлгі студенттердің кеңбейінді бағдарламалары аясында білім алуын көздейді. Мысалы, корпоративті басқару саласында міндеттерді шешу қажет болса, корпоративті құқық пен корпоративті қаржы да қатар алып, қарастырылады.

– Доктарантурадағы қос диплом бағдарламасы аясында кадрларды даярлау қалай жүргізілуде?

– КАЗГЮУ-де бакалавриат аясында қос диплом бағдарламасын жүзеге асыру жалғастырылуда. Экономика жоғары мектебінің студенттеріне SolBridge International School of Business (Оңтүстік Корея) 2-дипломын алу бірегей мүмкіндігі ұсынылады. Құқық жоғары мектебінде де қос диплом бағдарламасы қызмет етеді.  Ал магистратура бағдарламаларына келсек, мұнда әр түрлі үлгілер енгізілген. Атап айтқанда, 4 жыл бойына қос диплом бағдарламалары қызмет етеді. Құқықтану саласында – Ресей адвакатура мен нотариат академиясымен бірге, халықаралық құқық бойынша – Франция мен Швейцариямен бірге бағдарлама қызмет етуде. Осыған ұқсас келісім Германиямен де жасалуда. Келесі оқу жылынан бастап, ЭЖМ Флорида Университетімен бірге қос диплом бағдарламасын жүзеге асыруда бастайды. Meet another hero of our column -Daniyar Akhtaev, a successful entrepreneur, author of the original project to saturate the capital market with environmentally sound products, the head of Saryarka Association of Entrepreneurs of Astana city, the Director General of LLP ADS Holding, and finally, currently MBA student of Business school of KAZGUU. In an interview Daniyar Seythanovich shared his valuable business experience.

– Daniyar Seythanovich, how did you start your career?

– I can say that, probably like most of us, I began to work when I was a student at the state university. So it turned out that the day time I fully devote to studies and in the evening I was moonlighting as a security guard in a private company. After graduation I went to work on a specialty as a financial manager and started my career as a financier. At present I am the founder of the group of companies. The scope of activities of the holding is agriculture, floriculture, livestock, retail and construction.

– Why did you decide to enroll in Business School?

– As a chairman of the Saryarka Association of Entrepreneurs of Astana city, I can say with confidence that I often faced with stagnation in business due to lack of necessary guidelines and new knowledge, which at first seem to be a waste of time and resources.

To raise the level of professional competence has become a necessity for me, and one of the main aspects for successful continuation of business activities. The aim was to study the trends of modern business development. And I want to personally share my experience concerning the MBA program at KAZGUU University. The most important advantage of this program is getting two diplomas, one Swiss University UBIS, which with its quality education and reputable graduates had already managed to gain prestige in Europe. Classes are very active; some teachers are from Switzerland, who just hit their enthusiasm in the transfer of new knowledge.

– How does the knowledge acquired during the training in Business School contribute today in the promotion of your business projects?

– During training I perfect skills and simultaneously try to implement this knowledge in my companies in practice. In addition to the high level of knowledge, there are very reasonable prices, available discounts and flexible payment system. All that is needed is the charge of the motivation and desire in practice to prove the quality of the existing manager.

Teachers with great enthusiasm transmit the knowledge gained over the years. They perceive their work through their students. And among them there are people who constantly inspire us to learn. One of them is Zhamal Madakhmetovna that throughout her life never ceases to learn and to learn something new. I think that the choice was not wrong, because after talking with her I finally decided to study in the MBA program.

– Tell us to what extent is your project, in particular, to open Ecomarket network now in demand in the domestic market?

–Today Kazakhstani people’s diet consists of a sufficiently large number of food products, which include not entirely useful, if not even harmful components to health. The main objective was the creation of the company that implements environmentally friendly products (without GM). I can say that our products are in great demand among the population and have a permanent contingent of buyers.

– What are your professional plans for the future?

Development of existing business projects in the national scale, and access to the international level. Today, many businessmen, having reached a certain financial status, can get into the danger zone, where the development of intellectuality suited to the zero mark. But not many people know that, only by laying a solid foundation of knowledge you can reach those heights of which do not even dreamed of. The trend in developing countries indicates that it needs a different approach to business, to compete with Western giants and conquer new markets, opening up further opportunities for improvement.

And I can say with confidence that all students, including ten members of Saryarka Association will agree with my opinion about the MBA program of KAZGUU University.  

I try as much as possible to motivate entrepreneurs with the idea of getting a master’s degree in business administration, since only quality education creates great minds that build competitive business in our country. And I would like to personally thank the entire staff of the MBA program of KAZGUU University, including fine teachers, who are trying to raise the overall level of business in Kazakhstan to a higher level.
