On November 28, 2019, the KAZGUU School of Liberal Arts presented another stage performance, dedicated to the life of the great poet and educator Abay Kunanbayev.
The first-year students were able to immerse the audience in the atmosphere of the XIX century through the scenes of the life of Abay and his students. Together with the young stage director Ayan Alimbayev, they showed us Abay as the Father, who experienced the loss of sons; Abay as the Educator, who believed in the triumph of education and in the younger generation. Nevertheless, the main drama was the loneliness of Abay – he did not always find support from his contemporaries. Like many people of his level, the great poet was ahead of time, his thoughts were not the ones of the 19th or even the 20th century. His thoughts are relevant today and will not become obsolete tomorrow.
The interpretation of Abay in this performance caused a lively discussion in the hall, student actors were able to impress the audience.
The tradition of stage performances at M. Narikbayev KAZGUU University is connected with the course of studying the history of Kazakhstan. Within the discipline ‘Modern History of Kazakhstan’, students master not only the theory but also apply their knowledge in practice.
Thus, there is a deeper understanding of the key points in our history. The performance is such an interactive type of studying as visiting museums, trips to the country’s cultural centers, as well as guest lectures organized by the KAZGUU School of Liberal Arts.

As we know the Nauryz word is Persian as Nau – new and ryz – day and translated as a New Day. Due to the fact that word’s roots are Persian people think that the holiday is also Persian. However there is an evidence that Nauryz has Turkic roots.
Prof. Dr. Meting Ekici, Deputy Ambassador of Turkey to UNESCO, is proving that Turkic people have celebrated Nauryz from very long time and called it the New Day. Due to the great migration of the Turkic people from Central Asia to the south-west, Nauryz has been spread among Persians under the New Day name. According to Professor a direct translation of the “Nauryz” word is a well-grounded phenomenon since wthe Persian was used by the Turkic people as a literary language.
Indeed, the spread of Nauryz among the Turks is quite logical. First of all, compared to sedentary Persians the Turks knew well the equinox time. Also, the nomadic Turkic people engaged in animal husbandry knew laws of nature much better and therefore always waited for this day in a special way because they believed that new year starts from Nauryz
Secondly, in Kazakh chronology Nauryz called as the Start of a year (Zhyl basy) and it also proves that Nauryz spread out from Turkic people.
Thirdly, another sign that Nauryz has been celebrated by Kazakhs throughout history is that the Holiday in Kazakh is called as “Ylystyn Uly Kuni”, i.e. “Great Ulus Day”. When almost all Turkic people used the Nauryz Persian word, Kazakh people called it “Great Day of Ulus”.
Fourthly, coincidence of the “Korіsu” holiday, which has been preserved in the western regions of the Country and Nauryz, also proves its wide distribution and ancestral roots.
What is the meaning of the “Ulystyn uly kuni” (“Great Day of Ulus”) phrase? What is the basis of it? At the very beginning, it should be noted that it is the Kazakh meaning of the Nauryz word. The “Ulys” word is rarely used in Kazakh. Therefore, the meaning of this word is understood by no means all. In fact, the “Ulys” (ulus) word is equivalent to the “Halyq” (people) word. Due to the fact that Arabic word “Halyq” (people) has gradually become more common in everyday life, the Persian word “Ulys” eventually went out of words turn. At present, it is still used in the “Ulystyn Uly kuni” phrase.
If we take into account the phenomenon of replacing “s / sh” sounds in the Turkic language with the sound “t” (oshaq = otau, shoshala = toshala, sayaz = tayaz, syqyrlau = tyqyrlau, qilshyq = qyltyq, etc.), then we can prove that and the word “ult” (nation) also comes from the word “ulys”. The ancient Turkic form “ulysh” in the Kazakh language changes first as ulys, then in Kyrgyz as “Ulyt” (ulut), and then supposedly transformed into the form “ult”. The ancient form of “Ulysh” was also in Mongolian. At the time of Genghis Khan, returning from Mongolian, it came in the form of “Ulys” word as a meaning of “state, khanate” words: Chagatai ulus, Juchi ulus, etc. The most interesting thing is that it was included in Russian, and then returned to Kazakhs as a “volost” (region) word. Later on it just transformed to a “bolys” word but the meaning remains the same. Therefore Kazakh has such one rooted words as Ulys, Ult, Bolys but meanings are different.
Recently the work Ult is being actively used while the Ulys form remains only in “Ulystyn Uly Kuni” phrase. In the “Ulys on bolsyn, ak mol bolsyn” (Let the Nation be great and wealthy) Nauryz wish is a wish of well-being to all the people
Thus Nauryz celebrates during the Nauryz month (March) and we’d like it be officially named as “Ulystyn uly mini” (The Great day of Ulus)

Military departments exist in almost every major university in Astana city. This form of training allows students to get lieutenant shoulder straps and necessary knowledge without going to army. Colonel Amangeldy IBRAEV, the head of Military department of KAZGUU University, told how students are trained by trained soldiers within the walls of alma mater.
– How long has the Military department been based at KAZGUU University and how many students are enrolled in it?
– It was formed 21 years ago, while the university was still in Almaty. Last year, we celebrated a jubilee, and over the years more than 8,000 people had military training under the program of officers and sergeants of reserve.
Although our work is still more focused on training reserve officers as a mobilization reserve, a certain number of graduates continue military service under the contract. Among them Azamat Zhumadilov, a holder of the “Khalyk Kakharmany” (national hero) title. Training is carried out for two years, and at the moment, 350 people “serve” from among the first and second year students on the basis of the University. In addition, not only students of our University receive Military trainings. On a basis of signed memorandum of understanding students from Nazarbayev University and Kazakh University of Technology and Business also come to our Military department.
About 10 percent of students continue to serve in the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan. Since the university is the Law institution, students serve in police, military prosecutor’s office, and other military structures.
During two years, future lieutenants study a theoretical part, which ends with a practical part – monthly military gathering on a territory of one of the military units. There, cadets practice shooting skills, drive special equipment, practice combat skills. And after all take a military oath.
A student who wants to study at the Military department must go through four stages of selection. The first is a medical commission, if a cadet is fit for service for health reasons, then he goes to the next round. The second stage is psychological testing, which is conducted in special computer classes under the program of the Ministry of Defense. The third stage – physical condition testing, it includes running at 100 and 3000 meters and pulling up by the number of times. The last stage – students stidy progress. For all the tests student receives points, and first best 90 people get to the “service” under the grant.
From last year, women can now also get a shoulder strap. At the end of this academic year, 27 female lieutenants will receive military ranks. According to Amangeldy Ibraev, girls more distinguished, self-controled, in terms of discipline and diligence can give better than male fellow students. And even show commander skills.
For example, group A-24 is commanded by Zhanerke Kumshayeva, the frail-looking female student. According to her, sheis very much interested at further service in the ranks of the Ministry of Defense.
Ulan Kemalkhan, a representative of proactive student society recently became a member of Juridical clinic. Being a bachelor student of a law university Kemalkhan thinks that the Year of Youth could give opportunities for new big start-ups, says Kazinform, an IIA
Ulan studies at the M. Narikbayev KAZGUU University as a second year student and already is a head of the Greeters students organization, etc.
In his Annual Message, “Growth of Kazakhstan’s welfare: raising incomes and quality of life” the Head of State declared year of 2019 as a Year of Youth. The current youth from the very childhood begins to understand technologies but having a lot of new ideas they can not realize it, due to lack of funds and opportunities. One of the main tasks of the President is a creation of a Fund to support youth startups. Each of us must find ourselves in this life, find our craft and make image of our country better, ”the future lawyer said.
Recently Ulan actively participated in the “Popular Lawyer” Republican event which was aimed on providing free legal advice to population. Ulan added that in his future he wants to use received knowledge raising level of people’s literacy, access to justice especially to citizens with low income.

First of all the Civil society is people, people who care of a country and what’s going on with it. Those people are patriots who wish to contribute for everybody’s better life.
A role of a family, kindergarten, secondary schools and universities is fundamental, when it comes to the Civil Society’s formation. Everything starts in the family when we parents, grandparents influence our kids with said words and done actions. A child starts to lie because we show in our everyday life that it is ok to do so. For example, when our land line is ringing we ask a kid to answer and tell that we are not at home showing that it is allowed to lie, sometimes. We say not to use a cell phone but can’t leave it ourselves.
What’s next, kindergarten where we give presents to tutors meaning they would take better care of our child and kids realize that it is possible to solve all issues through material gifts. In a secondary school some pupils start cheating and it is ok when grading is going on and kids understand that teachers have favourable students or it might be their parents’ social status or gifts that helped with studies.
Classmates usually influence a behavior of children so that they smoke, use inappropriate words and so on. Thus, a certain behavioral coolness among students is determined.
During preparation for the UNT testing, there are cases when teachers teach children to write cheat sheets, hide phones to get high results. In universities, in addition to above mentioned, students are often involved as accomplices of deception (cheating, buying essays, theses and plagiarism). In addition, there are cases when they themselves engage in corrupt activities, bribing teachers and staff for good grades. In such cases, trained to be deceitful, unqualified students are fill jobs in accordance with their specialties.
Damir Shynybekov, the rector of the International University of Information Technologies says: We all know that dynamic changes are taking place in the modern World, which also affect the sphere of education. Along with the modernization of education in the states, there is a growing awareness of the role of the Civil Society in this process. For example, such characteristics of the Civil Society as humanization of social relations, promotion of democratic values, achievement of social unity both at the level of individual regions and countries depend on a successful implementation of continuous education strategy (lifelong learning) from kindergarten to university on a global level.

I have read a lot of interesting things about India in the Jungle book by the English author Rudyard Kipling and watched amazing animated movies and famous Bollywood filmes since my childhood. In consequence, visit in India became one of my dreams.
In this year, on september, my dream come true, to realize it helped me the scholarship of International technical and economic cooperation (ITEC) programme which sponsored by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. I participated in the course Progress to Proficiency (in English) at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), University was founded in 1958, Hyderabad, India.
The EFL University has 7 schools and 26 Departments. There are also research programmes, apart from graduate, postgraduate in this University. Campus has all facilities such as hostels, health center, canteen, gym, and library. The pride of the University is the Ramesh Mohan library. The entire collection of 167 000 books and back volumes have been automated and the same can be accessed with the help of OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) within the library.
The course included three months studying subjects such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, presentation skills and prononcuation. The teachers were leading professional in English language, they are certified IELTS experts.
During the course I could improve my English through daily speaking with my friends from of Africa, South Asia, South East Asia, Central Asia, and Latin America. It was a really good opportunity to learn about the culture of different nations around the world. And it is very sad to recognize that the most of them I will never meet again.
ITEC gave me great opportunity to visit a country like India and see a civilization that is over 3,000 years old. I found Indian people very kind, helpfuul and they have an ingenuous smile. ITEC coordinators made to feel us like at home and India became my second home.

Deputy head of Marketing Department of KAZGUU University
On the eve of the Day of the First President at the M. Narikbayev KAZGUU University the Center for the History of Kazakhstan and Ruhani Zhangyru of the General Education School together with the “Sóz cara” Club under the guidance of Ms. Gulbarahin R. Kylyshbai, an Honored Art Worker staged “Kerey-Janibek” that is based on the Ramazan Duman drama. Two epochs met in the hall: heroes of the XV century were sitting with serious faces, on the contrary students of the XXI century as an audience. The heroes of the drama were sitting in one half of the hall – on their faces anxiety, despair. They are in their own time, in character. Someone is quietly talking, other people express pain, others discuss plans. Audience, on the contrary, are excited. And here’s the beginning! The 15th century epoch is becoming clearer. The game of students is fascinating, the audience empathizes and invisibly, mentally moving to the part of the hall where the action takes place. It seems that the first part of the hall has expanded imperceptibly, and the audience is gradually drawn into the events of those times. The spoken words seem to unwittingly express feelings of guests, and it feels that they are all together and demanding justice from Khan Abulkhair, and decide to unite. Here are doubts about rightness of a decision, an expression of mistrust, disputes are also going down. But mostly people follow the Kerey and Janibek sultans into the Zheruiyq lands found by Asan Qaigy. Picture of moving from the inhabited places gets inside the blood. Huge white canvas (symbolically the color of the beginning, purity) turned into the tent of the left alone khan, then it turned into a heavy, but native, burden. This personified hope for the future and demonstrated that nomads take with them only the most important, dear to them things. Succession …, connection with the past. The birth of a child in a new place was marked as a good omen – yrym. “Qazaq is your name, Qazaq is your name, Qazaq is your name!” Says Asan Qaigy. Others understand it as “You are free!”. The Council of Elders decides that the Khanate will be called “Kazak handygy”, and people will be called Kazakhs and will be united Kazakh population. Both halves of the hall are also united. Like in the 15th century, but now in the 21st century, everyone is chanting, “Qazaq!” Qаzаq!”.
Applause are heared in the hall! What was it? Love for the Fatherland? Pride in their ancestors, who managed to fulfill their dreams? The desire to be like them? Dreams to contribute to society?
Yes, all these emotions were on the audiences faces. And, most importantly, it was seen the confidence that they can do it and will do it. And all this united collective in the hall was now took over by the guests: Deputy of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr. Available Tasbulatov,, Lieutenant-General and Mr. Mukhamedzhan Tazabekov an honored art worker. The audience with bated breath listened to the patriotic, ardent words of Mr. Tasbulatov, calling to love and take care of the Fatherland, the foundations of which were laid and defended by our ancestors And the penetrating speech of Mr. Tazabekov, calling for high morality, purity of relationships, spiritual revival. There was no indifferent person, students left the place being either joyful, or thoughtful.

This news was announced at the meeting organised by the RK Agency for Civil Service and Anti-Corruption Enforcement, titled “Building the culture of zero tolerance for corruption in the system of higher education”, which was attended by members of RK Parliament, representatives of the RK MOS, deputy heads of regional governments, and heads of higher education institutions.
At the moment, KAZGUU University has all the necessary conditions to completely eradicate corruption. Kazakhstan’s leading law school has been engaged in consistent practices of preventing corruption among the teaching staff and the students.
The anti-corruption efforts at KAZGUU University have been focused on three main areas: effective staff management, effective student assessment, and regular feedback.
For example, KAZGUU University has been one of the first universities in Kazakhstan that launched a Citizen Service Centre. CSC’s work is aimed at developing information openness and transparency of the educational process, building a culture of mutual respect, eradicating corruption factors.
In his speech at the meeting, Talgat Narikbayev, the rector of KAZGUU University, talked about a complex of preventive measures directed at stopping corruption, including the introduction of academic integrity values.
He noted that “the principled stance of the university on fighting corruption, on the one hand, significantly reduces the number of poorly performing students, and, on the other hand, through the implementation of the rating system of evaluation, allows to improve the quality of the teaching staff.
An agreement was reached at the meeting to promote the efforts in building a culture of zero tolerance towards corruption. In particular, a decision was made to hold an anti-corruption marathon that will start at KAZGUU University.

I feel happy for the students who chose KAZGUU. Studying at this university is not only a way to receive quality education and a big step toward a successful career, but also an opportunity to express yourself, starting from school. I am convinced that today the University has become an even better environment: a beautiful and modern building, located in the capital; lectures given by famous people and competent specialists; and high-quality management. Well-employed graduates of the university clearly illustrate the fact that KAZGUU maintains its reputation as the best in Kazakhstan.
We continue our column “International Students’ Life”, which specially prepared by KAZGUU International Department. This time our guest is Magdalena Anna Kaźmierczak, a master’s student at KAZGUU.
This is an interview with her, where you can find a lot of interesting facts from the life of an international student from Poland.
- Where are you from (country, town)?
I am from Poland where I have lived in many places but my favorite one is Wroclaw.
- When did you first come to KAZGUU and submit your application?
I applied to KAZGUU in August 2016
- What is your major and year of study?
I am a first-year master’s degree student in International Law
- How did you learn about KAZGUU?
It was not difficult to hear about KAZGUU. This university is one of the best in Kazakhstan so people talk about it and recommend it to friends.
- How do you spend your leisure time?
I spend my free time doing many different things. I enjoy hanging out with friends, reading about travelling and mountains, and planning new trips.
- What are your favorite books and films?
It is difficult to name just one favorite film or book. I have many favorite books from childhood that I like to come back to, such as Harry Potter. As for films, I enjoy those with Meryl Streep. I admire her because not only is she a great actor, but she can also use the fact that she is famous to change the world for the better. Her statements about women’s position in the world encourage real strength and spread beautiful ideas.
- What are you planning to do after graduating?
After graduation I would like to find a job in politics or diplomacy.
- What was your first impression about KAZGUU?
I was really impressed when I first arrived in Astana and I saw this building. It was so huge and monumental, I thought it may be a residence of someone very important because it looks very nice.
- Could you please describe 3 main differences or similarities between Kazakhstan and your country?
Three differences can be found quite easily because we have totally different climate. I am freezing during the winter here! Another thing that I cannot get used to is that it is difficult for a vegetarian to live in Kazakhstan. Everyone eats meat here! A couple of times, I even thought about a tasty shashlyk chicken, but I didn’t break! . The third difference is the people. I love the variety and I enjoy the fact that in Kazakhstan there is mix of cultures, races and languages and there are no conflicts between people!
Three similarities: 1) In both Poland and Kazakhstan there are beautiful mountains where I enjoy hiking! 2) People in both countries are spreading positive energy and are very kind. 3) Both Kazakhstani and Polish people love winter sports. Your Universiade was a great example. I truly congratulate you, it was a great event!
- Was it hard for you to integrate into the Kazakhstani society? Were you shocked by anything?
It was hard in the beginning. As I have already said, I am a vegetarian and it was quite difficult to start living in a country of meat lovers. Nevertheless, people were very helpful and I felt support all the time even though I didn’t speak Russian then.
- Do you have any favorite places in Astana? List three places.
I do have a few favorite places in Astana. I do enjoy going to the opera. I think it is a unique place and a very beautiful building. The next place I like is the Central park. In winter, I go cross-country skiing there and I like to walk in summer. And the last but not least is the library at KAZGUU. It is such a peaceful place! I enjoy studying there and I recommend it to everyone .
